Strengthening Cooperative Farming in the Cavalla (Nuwon) River Floodplain

The Cavalla (Nuwon) River floodplain in Duulay Town is one of the most promising agricultural zones in Nimba County. Through cooperative farming structures, Z Z Wodoe Enterprise LLC is partnering with local farmers to improve productivity, introduce better farming practices, and ensure that communities benefit from the natural abundance of this strategic landscape.

During his visit, County Coordinator Mr. Enoch Wonkpiah met with farmers, listened to their experiences, and discussed practical strategies to improve yields, manage seasonal flooding, and enhance market access for their produce. His engagement reflects the conviction that sustainable progress begins with meaningful dialogue and joint planning at the community level.

A Strategic Agricultural Hub Linking Three Nations

Situated along the Cavalla (Nuwon) River floodplain, the farming site is uniquely positioned within a transboundary context—bordered by Guinea and the Ivory Coast on one side and Liberia on the other. This configuration elevates the significance of the area in several ways:

  • It serves as a natural link between neighboring countries.
  • It creates opportunities for regional trade in agricultural products.
  • It encourages cooperation among farming communities across borders.

From Duulay Town, farmers cultivate fertile lands shaped by centuries of river activity, making the floodplain ideal for large-scale food production and diversified farming systems.

From Mount Nimba to the Cavalla Nuwon Floodplain

The geological landscape of the region extends from Mount Nimba, an area renowned for its diverse habitat of flora and fauna species, down to the Cavalla Nuwon floodplain. This continuous ecological corridor supports:

  • Diverse crop production and crop rotation systems;
  • Agroforestry and integrated tree–crop farming;
  • Livestock and mixed-farming opportunities.

The geological floorplain casts a wonder of beautiful agricultural space, with soils, water resources, and microclimates that can be managed to support intensive and sustainable farming. With proper planning, investment, and management, this landscape can contribute significantly to food production and supply for Liberia.

This field visit confirms the potential of the Cavalla (Nuwon) River floodplain to become a key contributor to national food security while also supporting rural livelihoods across Nimba County.

Engagement with Cooperative Farmers During the Visit

Throughout the field visit, Mr. Wonkpiah interacted closely with farmer groups and cooperative leaders operating along the floodplain. The visit focused on practical and strategic issues, including:

  • Touring active farming plots and observing current cultivation practices;
  • Discussing challenges such as seasonal flooding, input shortages, and access to tools;
  • Reviewing opportunities for technical support and capacity building;
  • Identifying priorities for future investment and cooperative growth.

The observations and insights gathered have been shared with the leadership of Z Z Wodoe Enterprise LLC, including Mr. George Z. Weamie, to help shape the next phase of support for cooperative farmers in Duulay Town and surrounding communities.

Unlocking Food Production Potential for Liberia

Z Z Wodoe Enterprise LLC recognizes the Cavalla (Nuwon) River floodplain as a strategic agricultural foundation for:

  • Expanding rice and other staple crop production;
  • Introducing improved farming techniques and cooperative management models;
  • Supporting local livelihoods and community resilience;
  • Contributing to Liberia’s broader food security and rural development agenda.

By working hand-in-hand with cooperative farmers, the company aims to translate this uniquely endowed landscape into a reliable source of food and income for households, local markets, and institutions across Liberia.
